QUEST TO BE THE BEST

Countdown to Global Time Attack Super Lap Battle
Back in April, we showed you a picture of 2Buck with no engine. "S2BuckChuck" is what we named this car because the sum of it parts are used and donated by members of the S2KI.com community, our racing friends and our valued customers. Last year at Super Lap Battle, we surprised ourselves when Graham Downey and 2Buck put down a respectable lap time of 1:48.118 at Buttonwillow Raceway Configuration Clockwise 13. Well we're back and we're looking to beat the fastest Honda S2000 record of 1:46.893 set by driver, Tyler McQuarrie in the C-West/BC S2000 in 2008. We asked for you to send comments and suggestions for rebuild and surprisingly we received more than we anticipated. So this means some of you are actually reading this! OK, people want to know, what are we bringing to the gun fight this year? We thought we tell you all before the event rather than after, so here are our setup changes for 2015!

Driver: Graham Downey
Racing Class: Unlimited RWD
Chassis: AP1 S2000 aka  "S2BuckChuck

Irene Your Too Damn Clean!

# IreneV1?   # IreneV2?   # IreneWe'veLostCount!

Year 2015 has not been hiccup free for Irene. With a new stroker 2.5L, driver Tom Tang was able to beat his personal best at Thunderhill Raceway and by taking advantage of his AiM Sports MXL2 data, driver Graham Downey was able to set a benchmark lap times at 1:53's for Tom to work at. By the end of the day Tom and shaved over another second off his lap time. With as much power and as much fun the 2.5L was, it didn't last long as we sustained rod failure and sent the #1 piston flying out of the block.

With 3.5 weeks left before Global Time Attack's Super Lap Battle, Tom Tang and his team devised the most feasible plan to get him back on track and on time. Stock engine + Boost! Big thanks to CT Engineering for coming through for us on a compressor and brackets. We fabbed up our own piping and air to air intercooler, tuned Irene back up on the dyno all with one week to spare! Not only will tomorrow be Tom's first shakedown since the upgrade, it will also be his first time racing Super Lap Battle in a supercharged form! With our assistance, we're confident Tom Tang will do well and we'll make sure Irene get's dirty while we're at it!

Driver: Tom Tang
Racing Class: Unlimited RWD
Chassis: AP2 S2000 aka  "Irene"
Engine: F22C Supercharged
EMS: Hondata K-Pro Engine Management
Weight: 2770 Lbs wet with driver

BlackTrax Performance Exclusive Partnership with Kingpin Machine on S2000 Spherical Suspension

BlackTrax Performance is happy to announce our exclusive partnership with Kingpin Machined Honda S2000 spherical suspension bearings used for competition level racing as well as those looking to get the most out of their suspension system. A two-year product development process provides you with the highest level of U.S. designed and manufactured spherical suspension components. BlackTrax Performance is now the exclusive install and service specialist for the S2000.

History

Some may recognize Kingpin Machines products and branding on some of the nation’s fastest pro level Honda drag cars as well as a handful of road race cars. In 2008, BlackTrax sponsored Honda Challenge driver Graham Downey needed to source replacement sphericals on his stock K24 swapped EK Civic (utilizing EG front subframe). After careful research he found Chris Brinson of Kingpin Machine, Chris’s meticulous (almost OCD like) attention to detail separates his product from the rest. Downey and his Kingpin sphericals laid down the law in 2008, 2009 & 2010 as the three-peat N.A.S.A Honda Challenge H1 National Champion. Now 6 years later, we’re still running on the exact same set of spherical bearings with no play in ANY of the bearings. This chassis has since logged over thousands of racing hours, HPDE’s and time attack events. None of the spherical bearings come with dust boots. That said, Kingpin’s design and tightly held manufacturing tolerances prove that dust boots are not necessary to control the wear on high quality sphericals manufactured by companies who build aircraft and milspec grade bearings such as Aurora and New Hampshire Ball Bearings. And for this reason, BlackTrax commissioned Kingpin Machine to develop the first custom S2000 set in late 2012.

Quality
Each and every sleeve is blueprinted to their specific control arm bore since the OEM specified tolerance for the bores are too wide for proper bearing operation. This level of quality and craftsmanship requires state of the art equipment an a one off manufacturing approach. Consequently, these are highly cumbersome and costly to build. In order to maintain the superior level of quality control, We (Kingpin and BlackTrax) are collectively sharing blueprint and machining specifications in order for BlackTrax to carry out consistent results giving you the benefits of longer lasting durable bearings that will significantly improve stability, additional grip, driver confidence and faster lap times and/or quarter mile times.

Anyone interested in upgrading to Pro Comp sphericals can ship their control arms to BlackTrax Performance to get the best quality sphericals on the market to date and will receive the following services:

  •     Disassemble, Shot Peen & Cleaning-Bores are Machined/Honed to Spec.
  •     Press & Weld Precision Machined 4140HT Steel Bearing Sleeves
  •     Control Arms Coated with Black Suspension Paint (Zinc coating available at an additional cost)
  •     U.S. Manufactured, Aurora and/or New Hampshire Ball Bearing Bearings are Pressed in, then Secured by Loctite 609 and a C-clip-Re-pack/Grease Ball Joints
  •     Quality Test & Return Shipping

Words From Kingpin Machine:
It is true that manufacturing quality products from properly graded, US sourced metal and utilizing the best available US produced bearings is more expensive. But it is not only the right thing to do, it ensures that you are running the safest and best performing parts available on the market.

-Only Aurora Performance Racing Series and/or the New Hampshire Ball Bearing Racing Series lines of bearings are used.

-Our no compromise approach extends to material choice as well. We machine our bearing sleeves from 4140 HT (Heat Treated) steel and the vast majority of our spacers from 7075 Aluminum. These materials are more expensive than the standard mild steel and 6061 AL but the superior surface finish, additional strength and hardness are well worth the added expense.

Installing control arms equipped with our spherical bearings provides a number of benefits:

  •   Lack of deflection allows reduced static camber requirements, thus minimizing uneven tire wear and increasing traction.
  •  Improved steering feel and precision as steering input is directly translated into wheel movement.
  • Reduction/elimination of dynamic toe change, which along with handling benefits can also provide stability under braking.
  • Elimination of high breakaway torque requirement increases traction; allowing the tire to stay in closer contact with the track surface.

All of our parts are designed, machined and tested right here in the United States.

Testing
We have 6 years of testing on various Honda applications using the same bearing and sleeve construction now being applied and currently used on the S2000 chassis. The S2000 Pro Comp Sphericals are being tested on five S2000's.

More from Kingpin machine:
Stock control arms and suspension housings simply are not produced with the same level of precision as our products. There is no reason for auto makers to hold to exacting tolerances when using stock compliant rubber bushings. We produce our bearing sleeves in a range of outside diameters and the proper sleeve is chosen to produce just the right amount of interference when pressed into the control arm.

Pressing bushings out of control arms is generally a dangerous process that requires specialized equipment. We have already created fixtures and dies to hold suspension components in place while applying the immense pressure needed to press out stock bushings. We have the proper assembly tools such as a hydraulic-electric press, an arbor press, welding tools, retaining tools and products etc. and just as importantly the experience to do the job right.

BlackTrax Performance is committed to maintaining continuous improvement of Kingpin Machine sphericals. We will continue to capture data from each control arm you send to us for precision installation and services.

The 2013 Racing Season Has Begun for BlackTrax!

2013 starts off with heavy momentum. For us, it seems the economy is picking up. As a result, we're seeing more people are out racing this season compared the last 5 years. BlackTrax Performance is proud to be partnering with the following 4 drivers and teams for the 2013:

SCCA Autocross and  Hoopa Hillclimb

You won't find a lot of bloggers and photographers at local cone shaving events as you would with Formula Drift or Time Attack however, Radix Motorsports owner Jaime Mendoza has had many successes that include National Tour and Regional titles with SCCA and other venues. Over the years, we've tuned his Integra Type R and multiple CRX's that we've lost count. This year Jaime brings out a new CRX chassis running a 2.0L B-series and the widest slicks we've ever seen on a CRX.  The 2.0L is tuned on Performance Electronics 3 ECU by BlackTrax.

NCRC Chrono Series, Speed Ventures S2K Challenge, Redline Time Attack, Super Lap Battle and Global Time Attack

Debuted in 2012, and recently featured in Dsport Magazine (May 2013 Issue #128), this mean green machine named 'Irene' started off with a collaborative partnership between Tunerplayground and Prima Racing. The team focused its inaugural year on chassis setup and captured the sought after sub-two minute lap times on street tires at Buttonwillow and Thunderhill. This year, Tunerplayground's own Tom Tang will be piloting this car and racing in all the organizations he can get his car accepted into. 2013 will be Tom's rookie year and we feel confident he will do well.  This F22C engine is tuned on Hondata Kpro by BlackTrax.
NASA Honda Challenge and  SCCA World Challenge

Team Prima Racing head, Andrie Hartanto brings well over a decade of wheel to wheel racing experience in Honda Challenge, World Challenge and U.S. Touring Car Championship. He's been hard at work over the winter on his Honda Challenge spec S2000 build. After piloting 'Irene', he decided to turn his perfectly nice daily driver into a fully caged racecar. Although the NorCal Honda Challenge scene has pretty much dried up, Andrie plans to race with the Southern California organization, attend Nationals as well as World Challenge at Sonoma Raceway. This F22C engine is also tuned on Hondata Kpro by BlackTrax.

Formula Drift

BlackTrax has invested into Matt Field Racing since before his professional career in Formula Drift. There's something about his skill, drive and tenacity that we don't see often in auto sports. Matt Field has gone from drifting the local mountains in a beater to competing against the best professional drifters in less than 4 years. The new S14 setup has already shown favorable results in Round 1 Long Beach and Round 2 Atlanta this season. With how he performed last year at Irwindale, many including us are eager to see how well he stacks up this year. This Supercharged LS3 engine is tuned on AEM EMS by BlackTrax.

We're proud to be partnered with such wonderful teams and welcome them to the BlackTrax Fam! Good luck gentlemen, Start Your Engines!
